This is the portfolio website and blog of Astred Hicks: a vintage-loving, red-head book designer and author based in Sydney, Australia.

Co-author and art director of {Graphic Design} Australian Style Manual published October 2011 by McGraw-Hill Education.

Lecturer at Billy Blue College of Design, I teach the VET course Design Fundamentals.

I am also a spirited freelance designer creating lovely books for trade and educational publishers. I love books,  I love reading them, I love browsing through them, I love the feel of them but most of all I love designing them.

With many years of experience working with publishers like Random House, HarperCollins, Harlequin, Pearson Education, McGraw-Hill Education, Oxford University Press, ABC Books, Little Hare, Federation Press, New Frontier, Scholastic and Walker Books; I just can’t get enough of book design.

My awesome design powers are versatile and books I have designed range through children’s fiction and non-fiction; young adult and adult fiction including thrillers, romance, fantasy and crime; educational texts; non-fiction and lifestyle.

I am also flexible so as well as creating covers, I am able to design internals for fiction, non-fiction and educational and typeset them to boot!

Obsessed with the 1950s and early 60s my home, dress and passion for collecting are consumed by style and objects from that period. I have been collecting clothing and homewares (especially 50s Australian homewares) for around 10 years.

Apart from publishing I have participated in exhibitions such as Curvy and Monsters @ Revolver, and have been published in such highly regarded pulp as Empty, Curvy, Curvy 2, Curvy 4, Desktop magazine, Desktop Graphics magazine and Noise magazine.
